Afghanistan bomb attacks kill 46

World / 2012-08-15

Kabul: At least 46 people were killed on Tuesday as suicide attacks involving as many as 14 bombers struck an Afghan city, media reports said.

The attacks began early Tuesday afternoon when 10 insurgents entered Zaranj, the capital of southwestern Nimruz province with explosive devices strapped to their bodies.

Three of the bombers were shot before they could detonate their explosives, and four were detained, but the three others were able to carry out their strikes, an Interior Ministry spokesman Mohammed Najob said.

Another explosion went off later at mid-afternoon outside a hospital near a busy market packed with people.

The attackers appeared to be targeting government buildings but most of those who died were people out shopping for food to break the daily fast of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

There were no claims of responsibility for any of the blasts but the strike comes during a campaign by Taliban insurgents and their allies to step up attacks as Western forces hand over security to local forces.
